The Seminar on “the Codification of Civil Law and the Paradigm Change in Civil Law Study” Held in Beijing

The Seminar on “the Codification of Civil Law and the Paradigm Change in Civil Law Study” was successfully held in Beijing on May 26, 2018. The seminar was jointly sponsored by CASS Law Institute and the Law School of University of International Business and Economics and attended by over 30 scholars and experts from various research institutions and universities in China, including China Law Society, Renmin University of China, Tsinghua University, Jilin University, University of International Business and Economics, China University of Political Science and Law, Heilongjiang University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, and CASS Law Institute. It was divided into four parts: opening ceremony, keynote speeches, discussion and closing ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Professor XieHongfei, Head of the Civil Law Department of CASS Law Institute, and Professor Shi Jingxia, Dean of the Law School of University of International Business and Economics, each gave a speech, in which they thanked the exerts and scholars for attending the seminar and explained the reasons for the choice of the theme of the seminar.

At the second session, Professor Zhang Wenxian, Vice Chairman of China Law Society, put forward some suggestions on the change of the paradigm in legal research in China from the perspectivethe systematic impact of the paradigm of legal research on the codification of the civil law; Professor Zhang Xinbao, Editor-in-chief of the journal China Legal Science, pointed out that, since the Eighteenth Party Congress, law journals in China has played the role of political guidance in legal research, provided academic services to various research organizations, and paid close attention to the major issues that have emerged in the process of construction of the rule of law.

Professor Chen Su expounded the issue of paradigm change of legal research from the perspective of law journals and pointed out that the development of law journals is of great significance to legal research and thathigh quality law journals play the role of shaping the image of the profession of legal research. He also put forward some suggestions on the big data research method, which is currently very popular among legal scholars.

At the third session, the participants carried out discussion on a wide variety of issues around the topic of “the Codification of Civil Law and the Paradigm Change in Civil Law Study”.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Zhu Guangxing, Deputy Head of the Civil Law Department of CASS Law Institute, and Professor Mei Xiaying from the Law School of University of International Business and Economics gave a summarization of the issues discussed and opinions expressed by experts and scholars at seminar and pointed out that the seminar has high theoretical value and guiding significance to civil law research in China.
