The Eighth National Congress of China Law Society Held in Beijing

The Eighth National Congress of China Law Society opened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the morning of March 19, 2019. The congress was attended by members of the Commission of Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, leaders of the relevant Party and state organs, and all representatives to the Eighth National Congress of China Law Society. President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Keqiang, Mr. Li Zhanshu, Secretary of the Commission of Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, Mr. Wang Huning, Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and other Party and state leaders attended the opening ceremony of the conference.

Representatives from CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law to the congress included: Professors Li Lin, Chen Su, Chen Zexian, Mo Jihong, Sun Xianzhong, Li Mingde, Liu Renwen, Xiong Qiuhong, Zhang Sheng, Xie Hongfei, Liu Jingdong, Zhai Guoqiang, and Dai Ruijun.

Professors Liu Renwen, Xie Zengyi and Zhou Hui were awarded the title of “National Advanced Individuals” in the China Law Society system at the congress.

Mr. Guo Shengkun, the Secretary of Commission of the Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, gave a speech entitled “New Responsibilities and New Actions of China Law Society in the New Journey towards Comprehensive Rule of Law at the Congress and Mr. Wang Lequan, the Chairman of China Law Society, presided over the Congress and delivered a work report of the Society on behalf of the seventh Council of the Society.

The main task of the Congress was to take Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era and the Spirit of the Nineteenth Party Congress as the guidance, summarize the work of the Society in the past five years, make arrangements for the work of the Society in the next five years, and elect members of the new Council of the Society and other leading organs.
