Professor Chen Su and Professor Sun Xianzhong Elected CASS Members

Recently an election of new CASS members (academicians) was held by the Academic Division of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in accordance with the Constitution of the Academic Division of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Detailed Rules on the Election of New Members of the Academic Division of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. After going through such election procedures as nomination, assessment, public notice and evaluation by experts outside CASS, a total of 12 new CASS members have been elected. Among them, two are from CASS Law Institute: Professor Chen Su, Director of CASS Law Institute and Acting Director of CASS Institute of International Law; and Professor a research fellow at the Civil Law Department of CASS Law Institute. The followings are introductions to Professor Chen Su and Professor Sun Xianzhong:

Professor Chen Su

Professor Chen Su is a native of Dalian City, Liaoning Province. He is currently a doctoral supervisor of CASS Graduate School, a second-grade research fellow and the director of CASS Law Institute, the acting director of CASS Institute of International Law, the editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Law, and Chairman of Assessment Committee of Professional Title of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law.

His main part-time positions include: Member of Legal Science Group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; Member of the Executive Council of China Law Society; Vice-chairman of Commercial Law Research Committee of China Law Society; Vice Chairman of Beijing Law Society and Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of Beijing Law Society; Members of the Case Guidance Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court; Legal advisor of the State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council; and member of Expert Committee on Legislative Work of the Government of Beijing Municipality.

He served in the army in Northeast China and then worked in the Enamel Factory of Dalian City after demobilization during the period between December 1976 and December 1980; admitted by the Law Faculty of Liaoning University in 1981 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law in 1985; admitted by the Law Faculty of CASS Graduate School in the same year and graduated in 1988 with a Master's Degree in Law; began to work as a civil and commercial law researcher at CASS Law Institute in 1988, became a research fellow of the Institute in 2000, a doctoral supervisor in 2002; and held the positions of the deputy head and the head of Economic Law Department of CASS Law Institute, Deputy Director of the CASS Law Institute, and the Secretary of the Joint Party Committee of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law.

Professor Chen Su’s main research fields are economic, civil and commercial laws. His key research areas include company law, securities law and real law. In recent years, he has also engaged in the study of the history of legal research. As the editor-in-chief of the book series “New Development of Legal Studies”, he has organized the writing of over 30 monographs in this series. He is also the editor-in-chief of many books, including Special Study on Securities Law, Research on the Legal Sciences of Contemporary China, and Commentary on General Principles of the Civil Code. He has published dozens of articles in various core law journals in China, including Chinese Journal of Law, China Legal Science, and Global Law Review.

Professor Chen Su actively participates in legislative activities. He was a member of Expert Group on the Revision of the Company Law under the Legal Affairs Office of the State Council during the revision of the Company Law, and a member of Expert Group on the Revision of Securities Law set up by the Financial and Economic Committee under the National People's Congress during the revision of the Securities Law in 2005. He participated in the expert demonstrations organized by state legislative organs on the drafts of the Property Rights Law, the Labour Contract Law, the Law on Mediation and Arbitration of Labour Disputes, the Law on Partnership Enterprise, the Law on Specialized Farmers Cooperatives, the Law on Arbitration of Land Contract Disputes, the Energy Law, and the Law on State-Owned Assets of Enterprises, and submitted written opinions on over 100 draft laws, administrative regulations and local regulations. Currently, as the Deputy Director of the Working Group on the Codification of the Civil Law of the CASS, he directly participates in the Drafting of the General Provisions of the Civil Code and other civil law codification work.

Professor Chen Su teaches courses mainly in commercial law, including company law, securities law and law on negotiable instruments. Apart from supervising doctoral candidates and masters students at CASS Graduate School, he also served as a member of doctoral dissertation evaluation committees in Peking University, Remin University of China, Tsinghua University, China University of Political Science and Law, and University of International Business and Economics and has participated in the evaluation of over one hundred doctoral dissertations.

Professor Sun Xianzhong

Sun Xianzhong, male, born in 1957, a native of Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province.

1998-now Doctoral supervisor, CASS Graduate School;

1999 'Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Jurist in China', a title awarded by China Law Society;

May-Nov. 1995 Gust Professor, University of Münster, Germany;

2006 Receiver of Special Government Allowance for Outstanding Contribution, granted by the State Council.

Publications

Professor Sun has independently written 6 monographs, co-authored over 10 other books, published more than 100 articles in various Chinese academic journals, and over 10 other articles in important academic journals in Germany, Japan, South Korean, and other countries; He is an internationally recognized Chinese civil law expert and his research results have been the focus of much attention in Germany, Japan, South Korean and many other countries and regions. He has been an expert specially invited by the Commission on Legislative Affairs of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress during the drafting of the Property Law and the Civil Code.
