Two Researchers from the Department of Ecological Law of CASS Law Institute Visit Australia

On August 12-18, 2018, two researchers of the Department of Ecological Law of the CASS Law Institute, Professor Liu Hongyan and Assistant Professor Yue Xiaohua, visited Australia under the Chinese-Australian Project on the Legal Protection of Polar Deep-see Fishery”. During their 6-day stay in Australia, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue visited three law schools (the Law School of the University of Adelaide, the Law School of University of Technology Sydney and the Law School of New South Wales University) in two cities (Adelaide and Sydney), attended a number of lectures, and exchanged views with about 10 professors and experts on a wide range of issues in the field of environmental law and on the future cooperation between CASS Law Institute and the relevant Australian institutions. During the visit to each institution, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue would give their Australian colleagues a comprehensive introduction to the historical development, the functions, the staff, and the fields of research of CASS Law Institute and the newly established Department of Ecological Law, thereby enabling them to have a brand-new understanding of the Institute and the Department and laying a sound foundation for further cooperation and exchange.

On the morning of August 13, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue visited the Law School of the University of Adelaide and held a meeting with Professor Melissa de Zwart, the dean of the Law School, and Dr. Liu Neng, a senior lecturer of the Law School. In the meeting, the hosts and guests gave each other an introduction of their own institutions and expressed the hope of strengthening the cooperation between them.

After the meeting, Professor Liu Hongyan and Dr. Liu Nengye exchanged views on the details of the joint project between CASS Law Institute and the Law School of the University of Adelaide, including research framework, the emphasis of investigation, the writing of research reports and procedure for the conclusion of the project.

On August 14, the delegation visited the National Protection Adelaide Hills Natural Reserve area accompanied by Mr. Paul Leadbeter, a senior lecturer at the Environmental Law Center of the Law School of the University of Adelaide.

Later, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue attended the lecture on“Paris Agreement’s Latest Responses to Climate Change”, given by Professor Antonio La Viña from the Philippines. In the evening, they attended the lecture on “the future of sustainable fishing industry”, by Professor Reg Watson from the University of Tasmania, Professor Margaret Young from the Law School of the University of Malborne, and Dr. Keith Rowling, the head of the Bureau of Fisheries of South Australia, and held a roundtable with them after the lecture.

On August 15, Professor Liu Hongyan and Dr. Yue Xiaohua held a meeting with Dr. Alexandra S Wawryk and Mr. Paul Leadbeter from the Law School of University of Adelaide in which they exchanged views on issues of common interest.

On the afternoon of August 16, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue visited the Law School of University of Technology Sydney and held a meeting with Professor Lesley Hitchens Gaicd, Dean of the Law School, and Professor David Leary of the Environmental Law Center of the Law School.

On August 17, Professor Liu and Dr. Yue visited the Law School of the University of New South Wales and held a meeting with Professor Rosemary Rayfuse, an internationally famous environmental law expert.
