A Delegation of CASS Law Institute Visits UK

On May 13-18, 2018, a three-member delegation of CASS Law Institute, headed by Director Chen Su, visited UK. Other two members of the delegation were Professor Xie Zengyi, Head of the Research Coordination and International Cooperation Department of CASS Law Institute, and Associate Professor Zhao Lei, a specialist in commercial law at CASS Law Institute. During its stay in UK, the delegation attended the seminar “The Impact of the Internet on Commercial Law and Labor Law: An Anglo-Chinese Dialogue” and visited a number of British institutions, including Centre for Business Research of University of Cambridge, Law School of University College of London, Queen Mary University of London and the Great Britain-China Centre.

On May 14, 2018, the seminar “The Impact of the Internet on Commercial Law and Labor Law: an Anglo-Chinese Dialogue” was held at Centre for Business Research of University of Cambridge. It was attended by about 20 scholars and experts, including members of the Chinese delegation, Professor Simon Deakin, Director of the Centre for Business Research, Professor Boya Wang, a senior researcher of Centre, as well as other researchers and visiting scholars of the Centre.

At the seminar, professor Chen Su gave a keynote speech entitled “Chinese legislation on e-commerce”; Professor Xie Zengyi gave a speech on “labor protection of platform workers”; Professor Zhao Lei gave a speech on “the legal nature of BitCoin”; and Professor Deakin, Professor Boya Wang and other British scholars gave speeches on various issues relating to the financial technologies and protection of labor rights against the background of new technological development in the UK.

After the seminar, members of the CASS delegation, Professor Deakin and Professor Wang were interviewed by the Centre for Business Research of University of Cambridge. In the interview, the members of CASS delegation gave a detailed introduction to the current situation and achievements in the development of e-commerce in China, and Professor Deakin spoke high of the achievements made by China in the application of Internet technologies and the construction of the rule of law. On May 15, the delegation visited the Centre for Business Research of University of Cambridge and held a talk with Director Deakin on the academic exchange and cooperation between the two institutions.

On the morning of May 16, the delegation visited University College of London and held a meeting was Professor Nicola Countouris, Director of the Institute of Employment Rights, Professor Carsten Gerner-Beuerle of the London School of Economics and other British commercial and labor law experts. In the meeting, the Chinese and British scholars carried out discussions on various issues of common interests and reached an initial agreement on the cooperation between the two institutions, including the organization of international seminars, the establishment of a mechanism for the sharing of academic information, the carrying out of joint research in some areas, and the exchange of scholars and students.

On the afternoon of May 16, the delegation visited Queen Mary University of London and held a meeting with Professor Spyrons Maniatis, Dean of Law School and Director of the Center for Commercial Law Studies, and other scholars of the Law School. At the meeting, Professor Chen gave a brief introduction to CASS Law Institute and the achievements made by China in the construction of the rule of law, especially legal issues involved in the “Belt and Road” Initiatives. Professor Spyrons Maniatis spoke highly of the achievements made by China in the construction of the rule of law in recent years and exchanged opinions with Professor Chen on ways of strengthening the cooperation and exchange between the two institutions.

On the morning of May 17, the delegation visited Great Britain China Centre and held a meeting with Mr. Nathan Hubbard-Miles, Assistant Director of the Centre, and Ms. Marina Mella, a senior programs officer of the Centre. At the meeting, the hosts and guests reached an initial agreement on the future cooperation between the two institutions, including carrying of joint research, organizing jointly academic conferences and jointly applying academic research projects.
