Scholars of CASS Law Institute Attend the First Roundtable on “Law and Female Development”

The First Roundtable on “Law and Female Development”, jointly organized by the Research Department of China Law Society, China Society of Social Law, and Marriage and Family Law Research Committee of China Law Society, was held in Beijing on May 25, 2018. The roundtable, aimed at promoting gender equality and optimizing the environment for women’s development, was attended by over 100 experts, scholars and legal professionals from various government organs, mass organizations, universities and research institutions.

At the opening ceremony, presided over by Professor Ye Jingyi, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University, Professor Zhang Wenxian, Vice Chairman of China Law Society, Ms. Li Yuyang, Deputy Head of the Rights and Interests Department of All-China Women’s Federation, Mr. Li Fucheng, Deputy Director of the Research Office of the Ministry of Justice, and Ms. Xia Juan, Deputy Director of China Center for International People-to-People Exchange of Ministry of Education, each gave a speech.

In his speech, Professor Zhang Wenxian discussed five basic aspects of women’s development has, namely free development, equal development, comprehensive development, development as subjects, and development of order, the relationship between the change of main social contradictions in a new era and women’s development, and the relationship between rights and law in women’s development.

  

After the opening ceremony, Professor Yuan Ming, President of the Yenching Academy of Peking University, gave a keynote speech entitled “Feelings, Responsibilities and Assumption of Responsibilities: Women from the International Perspective”.

The roundtable was divided into four units in which the participants gave keynote speeches and carried out discussions on various issues around the following three topics: “Macro-Thinking: Women’s Development in a New Era”, “Micro-Thinking: Real Conditions of and Legal Safeguards for Women” and “Promoting Development: Rule of Law Environment and Cultural Environment that Optimize Gender Equality”.

Three scholars from the CASS Law Institute attended the seminar. They were: Professor Xiong Qiuhong, the Head of Procedural Law Department; Professor Xie Zengyi, Head of the Research Coordination and International Cooperation, and Professor Gao Xucheng, a research fellow at the Department of Legal History. Professor Xiong gave a keynote speech on “Women in Legal Profession”. Professor Xie and Professor Gao made comments on the keynotes speeches given by their female colleagues.
