Professor Feng Jun and Professor Sun Xianzhong Interviewed by Legal Daily on New Amendments to the Chinese Constitution

On March 11, 2018, a series of new amendments to the Chinese Constitution were adopted at the First Session of the Thirteenth National People's Congress. On March 12, the newspaper Legal Daily interviewed five legal experts, including Professor Mo Jihong, Deputy Director of CASS Law Institute, and Professor Feng Jun, Secretary of Joint Party Committee of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law, on the newly adopted constitutional amendments.

In the interview, Professor Feng Jun pointed out that the new amendments have fully reflected the common wishes of the Chinese people of all nationalities and realized the high-degree unity of the propositions of the Party and the will of the people. Through the amendments, the current Chinese Constitution has entered into a new era along with the socialism with Chinese characteristics, laying a sound constitutional foundation for the continuous development and progress of socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era, and therefore will go done in history as an important milestone in the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Chinese constitutional and legal scholars should base themselves on the actual situation in China, provide powerful theoretical support for the comprehensive and effective implementation and the continuous development of the Constitution, so as to contribute to the modernization of state governance system and capacity and to the construction of a socialist state with Chinese characteristics under the rule of law.

In his interview, Professor Sun Xianzhong reviewed the four major revisions of the Chinese Constitution since1982 and pointed out the great significance and value of the latest revision of the Constitution: they have enshrined the scientific outlook on development and Xi Jinping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era into the Constitution, thereby providing basic political safeguard for the political stability, economic prosperity, and improvement of people’s livelihood. The constitutional amendments, as a top-level design, will create new historical opportunities for the political, economic, and social development in China and lay a solid constitutional foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
