  1978

The Seminar on Sino-American Economic and Trade Relations, jointly organized by WTO Law Research Committee of China Law Society and CASS Institute of International Law, was held in Beijing on April 8, 2018. The seminar was attended by experts and scholars from the Supreme People’s Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, China Law Society, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, CASS, Academy of Macroeconomic Research of National Development and Reform Commission, Center for International Economic Technological Cooperation of the Center for Economic and Technological Cooperation, as well as from relevant universities and research institutions in China. It was divided into five sessions in which the participants gave keynote speeches and carried out discussions on various issues around the topics of “new developments and new situations of Sino-US economic and trade relation” and “International law issues in Sino-US economic and trade relation”.

At the end of the seminar, the participants unanimously agreed that economic and trade cooperation is the stabilizer and ballast of the Sino-US relation. Mutual benefit and win-win is the essence of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation. Both China and US are the beneficiaries of economic globalization. China does not want trade war, but it is not afraid of trade war. Currently, the Sino-US economic and trade relation is faced with new challenges. The Unilateral trade policy of the US not only violates the WTO rules and harms the lawful interest of China and other countries, but also undermines international order of the rule of law and has had a very bad influence all around the world. Legal scholars and practitioners in China must speak out against such practice, and uphold the China’s lawful interest and the rule-based multilateral international trade mechanism.
