The Delegation of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law Visits University of Ottawa

On November 27-December 3, 2017, a Delegation of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law, led by Professor Zhou Hanhua, Assistant Director of CASS Law Institute, visited Canada. Other members of the delegation included: Professor Liu Jingdong, Head of International Economic Law Department of CASS Institute of International Law; Professor Xu Hui, Deputy Head of the Procedure Law Department of CASS Law Institute; Professor Xi Yuemin, Head of Economic Law Department of CASS Law Institute and Deputy Dean of the Law Faculty of CASS Graduate School; Professor Li Xia, an associate research follow of Constitutional and Administrative Law Department of CASS Law Institute; and Dr. Zhou Hui, an assistant research fellow of the Constitutional and Administrative Law Department of CASS Law Institute. This was the first formal visit to Canada by a CASS delegation under the cooperation framework of “CASS-University of Montreal Center of China Studies”. On November 29, 2017 the delegation visited the University of Ottawa, which was the second stop of the delegation’s tour in Canada, and held a meeting with Professor Jacques Frémont, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University. At the meeting, Professor Frémont gave members of the delegation a brief introduction to the University, the Law Faculty of the University and their cooperation with Chinese universities and other research institutions. Professor Zhou Hanhua gave Professor Frémont an introduction to the basic situation of the two CASS legal research institutes and the project of CASS-University of Montreal Center of China Studies. Professor Frémont said that he was looking forward to the cooperation between his university and CASS.

After the meeting with Professor Frémont, the delegation attended an academic seminar at the Law Faculty of the University. Before the seminar, members of the delegation held a meeting with Professor Céline Lévesque, Dean of the Faculty, and other staff members of the Faculty. During the meeting the hosts and guests gave each other introductions to their own respective institutions and their main research areas and the latest research results.

In the seminar, which was presided over by Errol Mendes, a professor of common law at the Law Faculty, Associate Professor Li Xia gave a presentation on “the Reform of the Supervisory System in China against the Background of Anti-corruption” and Assistant Professor Zhou Hui gave a presentation entitled “Chinese Legislation on Cyber-security”. After the presentations, members of the delegation carried out deep-going exchange and discussions with their Canadian colleagues on such issues as anti-corruption, public interest litigation, cyber-security, international trade cooperation, the constitutional and legal status of supervisory committees; environmental protection, protection of personal information, and the financial aid to and the operation of Sino-Canadian joint research projects.

After the seminar, the delegation visited BLG, one of the biggest law firms in Canada, and held a roundtable with lawyers of the law firm and representatives of the Canada International Trade Promotion Society. At the roundtable, Professor Xi Yuemin gave a presentation entitled “Trade Cooperation Between China and Canada and Related Legal Services”. After the presentation, members of the delegation carried out exchange and discussions with their Canadian hosts on such issues as the rule of law environment, the implementation of law and public policies, legal system of international economic and trade cooperation, government honesty and transparency; intellectual property law, and environmental protection in China.
