The Seminar on “the Inheritance and Modernization of Family Law” Held in Jiangxi Province

On March 25-26, 2017, the Seminar on “the Inheritance and Modernization of Family Law”, jointly sponsored by the Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Law and Marriage Law Research Committee of China Law Society and organized by the Higher People’s Court of Jiangxi Province, was successfully held in Jiangxi Province. The seminar was attended by over 40 experts, scholars, leaders of legislative organs and judges throughout the country. At the opening ceremony of the seminar, Professor Chen Su, Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Law, stated the purposes of and expectations for the seminar; Professor Xia Yinlan, Chairperson of the Research Committee on Marriage Law, introduced the preparation of and the main theoretical disputes over the Expert Proposed Draft of the Marriage and Family Part of the Chinese Civil Code; and Mr. Guo Bing, Vice President of the Higher People’s Court of Jiangxi Province, introduced the trial of family and marriage cases by people’s courts in Jiangxi Province. At the seminar, the participants carried out in-depth discussions on such issues as the value orientation of marriage and family law, the drafting of the Marriage and Family Part of the Chinese Civil Code, the guardianship system, the parent-child relationship, and the marital property relationship. Mr. Duan Jinglian, Deputy Director of the Civil Law Office and the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, introduced the new developments and main problems in the drafting of the Marriage and Family Part of the Chinese Civil Law and called on the participants of the seminar to carried out in-depth research on these problems, so as to provide theoretical support to legislation.
