Professor Hans Ingvar Roth of Stockholm University Visits CASS Law Institute

On March 5-14, 2017, Professor Hans Ingvar Roth, an expert on Turkish issues at Stockholm University, Sweden, visited CASS Law Institute for a short-term academic research. As an expert on cultural and human rights issues, Professor Roth has been engaged in the research on the drafting history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, especially the efforts and contributions made by the main participants of the drafting process in integrating the western and eastern cultures, the cultures of the old capitalist countries and newly-emerged countries, as well as the Christian Civilization, the Islamic Civilization, and the Confucian Civilization. One of Professor Roth’s main research topics is the contributions made by Mr. Zhang Pengchun, the former vice chairman of the UN Human Rights Commission, to the development of international human rights. The main purpose of Professor Roth’s visit to China is to discuss with Chinese scholars the outstanding contributions made by Mr. Zhang, a remarkable Chinese scholar, statesman and diplomat, and to visit places where Mr. Zhang once studied and worked. On the morning of March 6, 2017, Professor Mo Jihong, Deputy Director of CASS Law Institute, met with Professor Roth and gave him an introduction to the researches carried out by Chinese legal scholars on Mr. Zhang Pengchun’s works and thanked Professor Ross for his research and dissemination of the important contributions made by Mr. Zhang Pengchun to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to the cultural exchange between China and other countries. On the afternoon of March 6 and the morning of March 7, Professor Roth gave lectures on “Cultural Rights and the Implementation of the European Convention of Human Rights” at CASS Graduate School and CASS Law Institute. On the afternoon of March 7, Professor Roth was invited by CASS Institute of Literature to exchange opinions with experts and scholars of the Institute on the legal and literary thoughts of Mr. Zhang Pengchun. On March 8 and March 9-10, Professor Roth visited Tsinghua University and Nankai University, where Mr. Zhang Pengsheng once worked, and carried out fruitful exchange and discussion with teachers and students of the two universities. On March 13, Professor Roth was interviewed by a report of the newspaper Chinese Social Science Today on the main academic thoughts of and the important contributions made by Mr. Zhang Pengsheng.
