The book is a collection of works by Professor Liu Hainian, an honorary member of CASS, Director of CASS Center for Human Rights Studies, and a former director of CASS Law Institute. It was translated by Bi Xiaqong, an associate senior translator of CASS Law Institute, and jointly published by Paths International Ltd. and China Social Sciences Press. The original Chinese edition of this book was published by China Social Sciences Press in 2012. Funded by the National Press Fund, it was selected by the General Administration of Press and Publication as one of the key books published for the preparation of the Eighteen CPC National Congress. With Marxist theory as its guidance, this book systematically introduces the theoretical researches on human rights theories, the practice of human rights protection, and foreign exchange activities in the field of human rights carried out by China during the 60 years since the founding of the People’s Republic. While acknowledging the huge achievements made by China in the safeguarding of human rights, it points out the existing problems in the field of human rights and puts forward suggestions on their solutions. The book is divided into three parts: the first part discusses various fundamental issues of human rights, such as the concept of human rights, theories and historical development of human rights in China, and the scientific attitude of and approaches to the research on human right issues. The second part discusses various specific human rights, namely economic, social, cultural, political and civil rights, in light of the Universal Declaration of Human rights and the two international human rights covenants and the relevant provisions in the Chinese Constitution and laws; the third part is a collection of reports, presentations, and speeches given by the author in various international dialogues and seminars and other activities of foreign exchange in the field of human rights.
