This book is the first systematic monographic research on the Reforms of Shang Yang (350 BC and 356 BC), carried out through the application of the basic principles of historical materialism and in the context of macro- social environment of that time. The book consists of four parts: the first part examines the basis and the macro- and micro-environments of and analyzes the approaches to the realization of the reforms; the second part explores the concrete measures taken by Shang Yang for the implementation of the reforms; the third part introduces the results achieved by Shang Yang’s reforms; and the fourth part discusses the implications of Shang Yang’s reforms for the contemporary reforms and analyzes the possibility of and approaches to the realization of equal rights revolution in contemporary China.

About the Author

Wang Yaohai, a native of Suzhou City, Anhui Province; Ph.D. in Law, an assistant research fellow at the Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Main research areas: sociology of law and historical materialism. Main publications: The Creation of the Rule of Law in the Process of Institutional Evolution (2013) and Explorations in the Logics of Historical Materialism (2013).
