The work of the institute can be categorized as follows: First, to carry out research work in a wide range of fields of public law, private law and social law, including not only jurisprudence and legal history, but also laws of various branches and legal practices as well. A comparative method of legal research is always emphasized in the research work of the institute, not to mention research co-operations with foreign universities and research institutes. Secondly, to provide high-level legal education for students both within the country and abroad. With the ratification of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, the institute is entitled to enroll candidate student for doctor degree of law and master degree of law. Besides, the institute provides both Chinese as well as foreign scholars with opportunities to engage in advanced studies in various fields of legal research. And in addition, the institute offers advanced legal training course to public servant, judges, state prosecutors and lawyers. Thirdly, to participate in the major policy-making works of the state legislative, administrative and judicial section as a consulting body.
