The preparatory work for the establishment of the Institute of Law was initiated in 1956. In October 1958, the institute was formally established under the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, which was part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Until 1966 the |
institute had about 50 research fellows. Since 1979, the institute is a section of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS).
There are now 11 research departments and 11 research centers in the institute. The institute is entitled to confer doctor degree of law in 5 fields as well as master degree of law in 9 fields.
The institute is now publishing two Chinese language law journals and one English language journal, all of which are highly regarded in the legal circle.
The institute has a law library, which is the best of its kind in the country. Besides the institute has a human rights documentation center. Moreover the institute sponsors a law firm.
By now, the institute has a total working staff of 116 people, including 4 professors for life, 53 professors and 34 associated professors. 32 of the professors are tutors for doctor degree candidate and 43 of them are tutors for master degree candidate. In addition, the institute has honorary professors, visiting professors and specially invited professors both from China and abroad.
The first director of the institute was ZHANG Youyu. The succeeding directors were: WANG Zhongfang, SUN Yaming, WANG Shuwen, WANG Jiafu, LIU Hainian, and XIA Yong. Currently, the director is Dr. LI Lin, and his deputies are: CHEN Su, SHAO Bo, and FENG Jun.
